This website is designed to:
Our group formed in late March of 2020 to meet an initial goal of providing 1000 reusable cloth masks as protection against COVID-19. These masks were designed for patients and their caregivers coming into the Hennepin County Medical Center (HCMC) Emergency Department to protect them - and others - by reducing disease transmission. We also provided our masks to Emergency Department support staff so that medical-grade masks could be conserved for providers involved in direct patient care. We met that goal and we kept on sewing.
As of February 28, 2021, we have provided 22,160 masks to patients, Emergency Department staff and Emergency Medicine residents.
These reusable cloth masks are used as source control, to contain droplets that an asymptomatic or symptomatic person may spread by coughing, sneezing, clearing their throat, etc., which contaminate surfaces and infect other people. The masks also reduce transmission by keeping mask wearers from touching their nose or mouth and becoming infected.
We intend to keep producing masks and donating them as long as the need exists, and right now, that need is not going away.
